What typical mistakes in product design and TFT selection do we encounter time and again?
Complete Design of the product before selecting the TFT
The product is completely designed and a possible TFT is only sought at the end of the planning stage. It is then often necessary to fall back on special sizes, which are more frequently affected by discontinuations and are more difficult to procure. In general, we always recommend using standard sizes and selecting the display size at the beginning of the design phase.
Lack of customization of the product to alternative TFT
There should still be some space left in the housing to the TFT. The mounting and the software should be designed flexibly. If a TFT is discontinued, it is then easier to switch to an alternative product, as modules differ slightly in their external dimensions despite having the same nominal size (e.g. 2.4″). The possibility of adapting the voltage range and the software should also be taken into account during the design phase.
Display of still images, TFT cannot be switched off
TFTs can also burn in. For design reasons, displays are often left permanently switched on so that the information is visible at first glance. However, we strongly recommend using a screen saver or, for example, a proximity sensor to temporarily switch off the TFT in order to protect it.
Use of gray or pastel tones in the GUI design
Light colors are trendy and are also used in GUI design. However, if the TFT has slight burn-in effects, these are most noticeable with light shades. We therefore recommend using stronger colors.
Suboptimal integration of the display front
Different challenges arise depending on how the TFT is integrated. This can result in dirty edges or air gaps that have a negative impact on electromagnetic compatibility. Passepartouts should also not be placed too close to the active area, as otherwise slight deviations in parallelism become directly visible. This makes integration more complex and can also obscure part of the display depending on the viewing angle. We recommend consulting an expert for optimal integration.
