Nowadays, larger displays are mostly color and thus TFTs. But passive LCDs can also be produced in larger sizes.
The advantage of such a display is a captivating contrast. For example, large digits can be realized as a segment display. Application areas for such segment displays can be public signage such as public transport or parking guidance systems.
The 9″ display in the current example uses MVA technology, which is easy to read from all sides, but requires a backlight. Of course, such displays can also be realized reflectively, i.e. without backlight in TN technology. With a special bistable technology even static displays are possible, which do not need a constant power supply.
