Vertical alignment technology enables a negative display with a rich black background and white symbols or text in passive displays. Compared, for instance, to a negative FSTN (film super twisted nematic) display, black truly means black. This solution is therefore also attractive for full-black applications where the display is intended to completely blend into a black surface.
The particular characteristic of VA displays in general is the alignment of the liquid crystals. These are aligned even when no voltage is applied, in this case vertically. When voltage is applied, they tilt and allow light to pass through.
Disadvantages of VA-LCDs, on the other hand, include limited multiplex rates and high power consumption, as very bright backlighting is required.
The costs for passive VA-LCDs are comparatively attractive, making this solution a cost-effective yet modern option for simpler applications. The appearance can be further enhanced through colored back-printing.
