Vertical alignment technology enables a negative display with a rich black background with white symbols or text on passive displays. Compared to a negative FSTN display (film super twisted nematic), for example, black really means black. This solution is therefore also attractive for full-black applications where the display should disappear completely into a black surface.
The special feature of VA displays in general is the alignment of the liquid crystals. These are also aligned when no voltage is applied, in this case vertically. When voltage is applied, they tilt and allow light to pass through.
The disadvantages of VA-LCDs, on the other hand, are the limited multiplex rates and the high power consumption, as very bright lighting is required.
The cost of passive VA-LCDs is comparatively attractive, so this solution can provide a cost-effective yet modern solution for simpler applications. The appearance can be further enhanced by color back printing.
