Image Sticking

Image sticking with TFTs

So far, OLEDs in particular have been known for burn-in effects. But does image sticking also occur with TFTs?

The answer is yes. Whereby TFTs also heal again if initialized correctly.

The panel manufacturers' tests usually involve displaying a checkerboard pattern over different time periods: 1 hour, 4 hours and 24 hours. A medium shade of gray is used as a control.

Using a TFT as an example, we can show that the image sticking disappeared after just 30 seconds following a burn-in time of one hour. After 4 hours of burn-in time, the image sticking disappeared after one minute. After 24 hours of burn-in time, it took four minutes for the image sticking to subside.

The decisive point is the assessment of the burn-in. The check is generally carried out with a medium shade of gray. However, we use three additional tones for evaluation. They make it possible to observe burn-in effects significantly longer than with the standard gray tone.

Prevent image sticking

Due to the effects shown, we advise against displaying the same images, especially with strong contrasts, over a longer period of time, as well as against using grayscale or light background colors. Even if the duration is within the parameters specified by the manufacturer. A screen saver or switching off the display when not in use is always preferable.

However, if long display times are necessary due to the area of application, please contact us during the development phase. We have experience in selecting suitable cells and optimizing the software.
