So-called paper-white polarizers are an energy-saving and easy-to-read option for passive LCDs. The example shown below is a transmissive polarizer, the LCD can be read both with and without backlight. When the backlight is switched off, e.g. in daylight, the LCD is very easy to read and saves energy.
The name paper-white alludes to the good contrast and the almost white background, whereas classic transmissive displays have a much greener background.
The ideal application for such displays is, for example, in portable applications that are used indoors and outdoors.
