So-called paper-white polarizers are an energy-saving and easily readable option for passive LCDs. The example shown below is a transmissive polarizer, allowing the LCD to be read with or without a backlight. When the backlight is off, for instance in daylight, the LCD is highly readable and power-efficient.
The name 'paper-white' refers to the excellent contrast and the almost white background, whereas classic transmissive displays typically feature a distinctly greener background.
Such displays are ideally suited for portable applications used in both indoor and outdoor environments.
