Micro-LEDs are seen as a promising successor to LCDs and OLEDs - with advantages such as extreme brightness, high energy efficiency and a long service life. But how ready for practical use is the technology really, and how does it compare to established solutions such as TFT displays?
What are micro LEDs?
Micro-LEDs consist of tiny, self-luminous LEDs - each acting as a single pixel. Like OLEDs, they do not require backlighting and are correspondingly thinner than non-self-luminous displays such as LCDs. The big difference: Micro LEDs are based on inorganic semiconductor technology, which gives them a significantly longer service life, brightness and robustness.
Advantages in an industrial environment
- High brightness: Up to 10,000 cd/m² - ideal for displays outdoors or under strong ambient lighting.
- Long service life: No burn-in, no ageing of organic materials as with OLEDs.
- Low energy consumption: Micro LEDs are very efficient, especially with predominantly dark content.
- High contrast and fast response: ideal for dynamic content or status displays.
- Robust and temperature-stable: Can also be used reliably in harsh environmental conditions.
The current status: Not yet ready for mass production
Despite their potential, micro LEDs are still in the development phase. The first pilot productions are underway and individual series products (primarily in the premium TV and automotive segments) are available. However, the technology is not yet ready for widespread industrial use.
Reasons for this:
- High manufacturing costs due to complex pick-and-place processes
- Limited sizes and quantities, especially for customized formats
- Still missing standards in driver ICs and control for industrial HMI solutions
Our recommendation: Proven TFT technology
For industrial applications, we currently continue to recommend the use of TFT displays. This technology is:
- Tried and tested over many years
- Widely available in all sizes and formats
- cost-efficient
- Technically mature, can also be used reliably for industrial applications
TFTs offer an excellent price-performance ratio and can be stably integrated into series products - with clearly calculable delivery times and robust support from display manufacturers.
Outlook
Micro-LEDs offer an exciting prospect for the future of industrial display units - especially where brightness, energy efficiency and service life are crucial. However, patience is still required for mass use in industry. Until then, TFTs remain the first choice for robust, proven and economically viable display solutions.
