Currently, larger displays are predominantly color, thus utilizing TFT technology. However, passive LCDs can also be manufactured in larger sizes.
A significant advantage of such a display is its outstanding contrast. For instance, large digits can be implemented as segment displays. Applications for these segment displays include public signage, such as in public transport systems or parking guidance systems.
The 9-inch display in the current example utilizes MVA technology, which offers excellent readability from all viewing angles but requires a backlight. Naturally, such displays can also be implemented as reflective units, meaning without a backlight, using TN technology. Furthermore, with specialized bistable technology, static displays are achievable that do not require continuous power supply.
