In Brief
- NFC E-Paper up to 4.2" – wireless, battery- and cable-free operation
- Design content via app and update via NFC data transfer
- Ideal for name tags, door signs, price tags, and shelf labels
- Cost-effective module with good resolution and wide viewing angle
⏱ Estimated Reading Time: 2 Minutes
E-Paper displays have enjoyed great popularity for years because they offer a paper-like reading experience with an excellent viewing angle, and content remains visible for extended periods without a permanent power supply. With our new NFC E-Paper, we are taking another step forward: The module operates entirely without batteries or cables and is updated purely via NFC.
Easily update content via app
The concept behind it: Content can be prepared in advance using a specially developed app and then directly transferred to the display via NFC data transmission. The update time is in the range of seconds, depending on the size. Currently, this technology can be implemented for displays up to 4.2 inches – ideal for compact applications such as:
- Name tags for conferences or events
- Door signs and seating solutions in meeting rooms
- Price tags or shelf labels in retail
- Information displays in various devices and enclosures
Advantages of our NFC E-Paper
The NFC E-Paper module is designed for particularly cost-effective production. Despite its simplified construction, the display offers good resolution, a stable viewing angle, and durable functionality. As neither batteries nor cables are required, maintenance costs and power supply efforts are eliminated.
Your advantages at a glance:
- No battery required – eliminating recurring costs for batteries or replacement
- Wireless – direct data transfer via NFC
- Flexible – content individually customizable via app
- Environmentally friendly – power-saving, passive E-Paper
- Easy integration – slim module, easily integrable into existing devices and enclosures
- Versatile – usable for shelf labels, name tags, and price tags
Perfect alternative to conventional displays
Compared to conventional LCD or TFT displays, this e-paper does not require a continuous power supply. The image remains visible without any power being applied. This makes the solution particularly suitable for applications where a display needs to show the same content for extended periods or requires flexible, on-the-fly adjustments.
Who is it suitable for?
As a user, you benefit from a modern module that can be flexibly integrated into various enclosures and products. Unlike many Waveshare Papers or other standard displays, this system is specifically designed for cost-efficient integration with NFC.
This opens up new possibilities for compact, mobile, and sustainable solutions that operate entirely without cables and batteries.
Background: How does NFC work with battery-less e-paper displays?
Near Field Communication (NFC) is a short-range wireless technology used for wireless data exchange over very short distances – typically a few centimeters. In the case of the presented e-paper module, NFC performs a dual function: On one hand, it facilitates the transmission of the content to be displayed, and on the other hand, it supplies the display module with the necessary energy during the brief update process.
The principle is based on inductive coupling. An NFC-enabled device, such as a smartphone or a dedicated NFC writer, generates a high-frequency magnetic field as it approaches the module. This field is received by the display and converted into electrical energy – sufficient to activate the display for a few seconds and update the displayed content.
During this brief activation period, the prepared content is transmitted via the NFC connection. The data can originate, for instance, from a mobile app that sends text, symbols, or graphics to the e-paper. Upon completion of the update, the new image remains permanently visible on the display – entirely without further power supply. This is one of the greatest advantages of bistable e-paper technologies.
