TFT displays are at the heart of modern screens - from industrial control devices and medical monitors to consumer electronics such as tablets and touchscreens. Their functionality is based on thin-film transistors (TFTs for short), which precisely control each individual LCD cell and thus ensure brilliant colors, high resolutions and fast response times.
The quality of a display depends crucially on the manufacturer of the TFT cell. Leading global companies such as BOE, AUO, Innolux, Tianma, Truly, Laibao, GP, Mantix, Sharp, LG Display, CSOT (China Star Optoelectronics) and HannStar set technological standards in panel production. Each of these manufacturers offers panels in a wide range of sizes - from compact 2-inch displays to large-format monitor solutions - with technologies such as IPS, MVA or TN.
These TFT panel manufacturers not only develop the matrix structure, but also decisively determine parameters such as contrast, brightness, viewing angle stability and the exact RGB pixel structure. Depending on the application - whether industrial, automotive or medical technology - factors such as interfaces, touch integration or LED backlighting are also important.
In this article, we provide an overview of the leading TFT cell manufacturers, their technologies and the role of the TFT cell in modern display technology.
Focus on industrial and medical technology applications
While large display manufacturers are often associated with mass production for consumer devices, there are a number of suppliers whose TFT cells are specially optimized for demanding industrial and medical applications. These manufacturers focus on highly reliable LCD displays with stable drive, long life, wide viewing angles and customizable interfaces - perfect for environments with high brightness, contrast and response time requirements.
Specialized TFT panels are used in particular for smaller screen diagonals - for example in the 2 to 10 inch range - as well as for customer-specific solutions. In the following sections, we present selected manufacturers who have made a name for themselves with their technical quality, flexibility and wide range of products for these professional applications.
BOE Technology Group
BOE is a manufacturer based in China and is one of the world's largest producers of TFT LCD panels. In recent years, the company has established itself not only in the consumer electronics sector, but also in industrial and medical technology applications. BOE operates numerous production lines of different generations (Gen 4.5 to Gen 10.5) and is therefore able to realize almost all display formats and technologies - from compact TFT cells to large-area LCDs.
The company offers a broad portfolio of IPS and ADS technologies, which are known for their high color fidelity, excellent viewing angle stability and fast response times. BOE is considered to be very attractively priced, particularly due to its high production capacity and strong market position in Asia. Particularly in the 7 to 15 inch range, BOE supplies TFT displays with versatile interfaces (LVDS, eDP) and optional touchscreen integration, making them ideal for industrial panels, operating devices or medical screens.
GP Display (Giant Plus)
GP Display, also known internationally as Giant Plus, is a Taiwanese manufacturer of TFT-LCD cells with a clear focus on industrial and automotive applications. The company currently operates two TFT production lines that are specially designed for smaller motherglass sizes. This not only allows GP to offer a high degree of flexibility in terms of format selection, but also to realize comparatively low minimum order quantities - a decisive advantage for many OEMs and developers in the area of special solutions or low-volume series production.
GP specializes in high-quality TFT cells in the small and medium screen diagonal range (typically 2.0 to 7.0 inches) and offers panels with robust LED backlighting, excellent colour reproduction, stable control and an optional touchscreen. The displays are particularly suitable for HMI systems, industrial terminals and vehicle displays where reliability, response time and good readability are paramount.
HannStar Display Corporation
HannStar is a Taiwanese TFT-LCD manufacturer with many years of experience in display production. The company currently operates a TFT production line and focuses on selected niche markets where reliability and specific display characteristics are crucial.
Of particular note is HannStar's specialization in reflective TFT technologies developed for POS and POST applications (point-of-sale / point-of-service terminals). These panels offer very good readability in daylight, even without intensive backlighting - a clear advantage in terms of energy efficiency. Another technical advantage is the very low burn-in behavior of HannStar displays, which makes them particularly suitable for applications with static image content or continuous operation.
HannStar is particularly well represented in the small to medium-sized screen diagonal range - typically between 3.5 and 12.1 inches. The displays impress with solid response times, good contrast and flexible interface options, making them an attractive choice for HMI systems, industrial devices and service terminals.
Truly Semiconductors
Truly Semiconductors is an established Chinese manufacturer of TFT LCDs based in Huizhou, Guangdong. The company is privately owned and currently operates two dedicated TFT production lines (P1 and P2), supplemented by additional TFT-compatible production capacity for AMOLED technology. This production structure enables Truly to serve both classic TFT panels and modern OLED solutions - especially for professional applications.
In the TFT-LCD sector, Truly has clearly specialized in automotive panels. The displays on offer are characterized by robust thin-film transistors, long-term stable backlighting and excellent readability. Particularly noteworthy is the support of wide temperature ranges (e.g. -30 °C to +85 °C), which makes Truly panels the preferred choice for use in vehicles, outdoor systems and demanding industrial environments.
Thanks to this technical orientation and consistent focus on quality, Truly is not positioned in the low-price segment - the panels are more expensive, but offer outstanding long-term stability, high reliability and excellent optics with high contrast and stable viewing angles.
